02 — How the work goes

Traditional stucco is a system, not a surface. Here's the order we work in, and why each layer matters — so you know what you're paying for.

Lath
A weather-resistive barrier and galvanized wire lath go on first. Everything above this only performs as well as this layer does.

Scratch coat
The first coat is pressed into the lath and scored horizontally, giving the next coat something mechanical to grab onto.
03
Brown coat
Where the wall becomes flat, plumb, and true — and where most of the cure time lives. Rushing this is what causes cracking later.
04
Finish coat
Color and texture. Sand, lace, dash, or smooth — matched to your existing walls, or specified fresh for new construction.

Can you match my existing stucco texture?
Yes. Texture matching is one of the things we do most. We match sand, lace, dash, and smooth finishes so a repair blends into the surrounding wall instead of standing out as a patch. Older walls that have weathered may need the surrounding area feathered, or a wall re-finished corner to corner, to get a seamless result — and we'll tell you upfront if that's the case.
Do stucco cracks mean the whole wall needs replacing?
Usually not. Most hairline cracks are normal settlement and can be repaired without removing the wall. Larger cracks, bulging, soft spots, or staining can mean moisture is getting behind the stucco, which is a bigger repair. We walk the property and tell you honestly which situation you have rather than quoting a full replacement by default.
How long does a stucco job take?
A typical patch or crack repair is one to two days. A full three-coat stucco application on a house takes longer, because each coat needs cure time between applications — commonly one to two weeks of calendar time depending on square footage, weather, and the finish selected. You get a realistic schedule with the estimate, not an optimistic one.
How much does stucco repair cost in San Diego?
Cost depends on the size of the affected area, whether the lath and moisture barrier underneath are still intact, how difficult the existing texture is to match, and how easy the wall is to reach. A small crack repair and a wall with water damage behind it are very different jobs. Estimates are free, and we price the actual scope after seeing the wall rather than quoting a range over the phone.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Maya Stucco Inc. holds California contractor license #1147468 and carries insurance. You can verify our license status directly with the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) before you hire us — we'd encourage it for any contractor you're considering.
Do you work with general contractors and property managers?
Yes. A large share of our work is commercial and trade work for builders, general contractors, and property management companies across San Diego County. We handle new construction, renovation scopes, and multi-unit repair work with scheduling you can plan around.
What's the difference between stucco and EIFS?
Traditional stucco is a cement-based system applied in three coats over wire lath — hard, dense, and heavy. EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) is a lighter system built over rigid insulation board with a synthetic finish coat, and it adds insulation value to the wall. They can look similar once finished but they repair very differently, so identifying which one is on your building matters before any work starts. We install and repair both.
